VICTORY!!! RIVER CITY ROVERS BEAT CHICAGO FIRE, 2-1!
Louisville, KY—The River City Rovers men’s outdoor soccer team had an outstanding game tonight at Christian Academy’s Centurion Soccer Field. Not only did they score a win, they defeated the 2nd place team in the Great Lakes Division. This, in addition to tying the Michigan Bucks, the number one team in the conference, in a May 21st home game.
The Rovers showed great offensive strengths in the first half of the game. “We came out charging,” said Coach Muhamed Fazlagic. “We had to show Chicago that even though we’re new, our players are experienced.”
The Rovers 2 goals for the night were both scored by #6 (defense), Sam Brooks. The first goal came at 35 minutes in the first half, and the second at 38 minutes with an assist by Dustin Downey. Downey also earned a yellow card in the second half for an accidental clipping on Chicago’s forward #53, who seemed to be everywhere at any point of the game.
Fire’s #57, Hunter Guiskie, scored the single goal for Chicago in the 63rd minute of the game, and the tension mounted as Chicago desperately tried to even the score. Rovers fans thundered applause as a game-ending, split-second deflection by Rovers keeper, Kees Heemskerk, sent the ball skyward in a beautiful sunset lit scene at the field.
The Rovers next home game is Friday, June 24th at 7pm. The Rovers will be playing the Toronto Lynx at Centurion Soccer Field (Christian Academy at 700 S. English Station Road, Louisville.) A full schedule of home and away games can be found at www.roverssoccer.com.
