It was another goal-fest for Premier Development League alums in week two of Major League Soccer, but one net-minder also showed himself well in his club’s debut match of 2018.

All eyes are on Gyasi Zardes early on this year, as the former LA Galaxy turned Columbus Crew forward struck twice in his team’s 3-2 win over the Montreal Impact, including a last-second penalty to snatch the win away. The goals bring him to three total on the season and mark a return to form that has been years in the making.

Elsewhere, the New York Red Bulls cruised to a 4-0 rout of the Portland Timbers, with ironman goalkeeper Luis Robles marking another shutout in his illustrious career. He wasn’t the only defensive-minded player to shine, as Steven Beitashour also made an impact for Los Angeles FC as they continue their hot start to their time in MLS.

Check out the top five performers from week two of MLS play below.

Top Five PDL Alum Performances

Gyasi Zardes, F - Columbus Crew

Started, played 90 minutes and recorded TWO GOALS in Crew’s 3-2 win vs. Montreal Impact

Zardes continued his hot start to 2018, adding another two goals to bring his tally up to three on the season. After expanding the Crew’s lead to 2-0 in the first 15 minutes of the match, Zardes converted a last-second penalty in the 90+4 minute to snatch all three points for his club, giving them six points through two matches this season.

Steven Beitashour, D - Los Angeles FC

Started, played 90 minutes and recorded TWO ASSISTS in the Los Angeles FC’s 5-1 win vs. Real Salt Lake

Despite being in defense for expansion club Los Angeles FC, Steven Beitashour more than contributed on the offensive end of his club’s 5-1 road thrashing of Real Salt Lake. The PDL alum contributed two assists to his team’s offensive showing, while going the full 90 minutes and helping hold RSL to a single goal in response.

Luis Robles, GK - New York Red Bulls

Started, played 90 minutes and recorded a SHUTOUT in the New York Red Bulls’ 4-0 win vs. the Portland Timbers

The Red Bulls ironman goalkeeper proved himself the star of the show in defense once again at Red Bull Arena in the season-opener, pitching a shutout against the Timbers in a rout for the home team. Robles was called into action sparsely, as the Timbers only managed one shot on target for him to save.

Ethan Finlay, M - Minnesota United FC

Started, played 90 minutes and recorded TWO GOALS in Minnesota United FC’s 2-1 win vs. Orlando City SC

In a tightly-contested match, Ethan Finlay bookended the scoring between Minnesota United FC and Orlando City SC to give the Loons a 2-1 victory on the road in Orlando. The U.S. Men’s National Team winger only took two shots in the match, but both were on target and both found the back of the net to seal the Loons first win of 2018.

Kei Kamara, F - Vancouver Whitecaps

Started, played 58 minutes and recorded ONE GOAL in the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 win vs. the Houston Dynamo

Another alum beginning the 2018 season on the right foot, Kei Kamara seized his second goal of the season to open the scoring on Saturday via a first-half penalty. That goal, combined with another from Brek Shea, was enough to boost the Whitecaps to their second victory of the season and a picturesque start to 2018.
